Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit this island.
During the attack of Mongols, Sultan Muhammad Khwarazm, the ruler of Iran at the time, fled to this island and died there. There are also several castles on the island, indicating that the area was a hunting ground for Safavid kings. The island has been occupied by the Russians twice in the past. The first was during the reign of Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, who was driven out of the region by Iranian forces, and the second was during the reign of Mohammad Shah Qajar, that Russians were able to build military forts, residential and commercial centers, and for some time after the end of World War II live on this island.
By the outbreak of floods in 1993 on this island, the residents of this area, migrated to Mikankaleh, and now the temporary residents of Ashuradeh Island are mostly fishermen and governmental staff.
The presence of various animals such as foxes, pheasants, hogs, and the wide range of wild birds in most seasons, as well as watching sturgeon fishing, wooden pier, and Turkmen port facilities, attract many tourists from all over Iran and the world to this region. The island also has historical monuments such as the ruins of the hunting grounds of the Persian kings and the historic fortress of the Russians (the headquarters of the Russians at the time of their occupation).
If you plan to spend the night on this island, considering the lack of local accommodation, it is better to go to Gorgan and stay there.
Due to the lack of permanent residents, the island lacks the presence of local guides.
The area is home to different animal species and a wide variety of birds migrate to the island during different seasons. Increasing the population of tourists and lack of education on the importance of protecting and preserving natural resources in this area can have irreparable effects on the ecosystem of this island.
