Rig-e Zarrin desert orMoghestan is located in a village with the same name close to Ardakan city. This area is divided into the northern and southern part by the heights passing across the desert. At the central part of Rig-e Zarrin, Siah Kooh mountain stands tall and rises dramatically to a height of 2050m. Which is why this desert formerly was called Siah Kooh or Aqda. Highlands and abundant vegetation have made this region as a top destination for desert tourism over recent years.

Rig-e Zarrin desert is home to several animal species including wolf, jackal, hyena, Rueppell’s fox, monitor lizard, lacertid, Geckos and Agamas families, multiple species of snakes and scorpions, See-see Partridge, eagle, bustard, falcon, etc. Rig-e Zarrin desert’ vegetation is very scarce. Through the edge of the desert Tamarisk trees have grown and also there are several kinds of medicinal plants like Alhagi, Ziziphora, Atriplex, lepidium sativium.

Zoroastrians ceremonies take place at their pantheon named Pir-e Sabz. 

Routes

The best way to travel this desert is from Ardakan city, so first head to the Ardakan-Ahmadabad road and go straight ahead to reach the desert, also you can drive from Anarak to Esmaeelian village and continue your way into the Siah Kooh.

Local community

Near the desert, there is a shrine called Pir Sabz, where various ceremonies are held every year and bring together Zoroastrians from all over the world, where one can get acquainted with the Zoroastrian religion and their architecture.

Off-road vehicles driving unfortunately cause migration of wildlife habitats and cause changes through the ecosystem of the area and also some of travelers litter the environment which may take years to be decomposed and moreover, it can harm animals.

Desert morphology

The southern desert expanded around 280 square kilometres that %45 of the land covered with the clay pans and the remaining %55 contained swampy fields. The clay pans spread through the south and southwest portion of the desert. The northern desert from the edge of southeast and southwest portions is surrounded by the expanses of sand dunes and apparently the sand dunes of this area are fixed. The northern desert stretches 300km in the form of a triangle; %87 of it covered with the clay pans and %13 of the land encompasses swampy fields and a seasonal river flows there from the eastern side.

There is a pantheon close to the desert named Pir-e Sabz where different ceremonies take place every year and bring Zoroastrians together, it makes an opportunity to know more about their religious ceremonies and their architecture.
